Cool Technology...Unbeatable Knowledge

Hot Business Grows With Cool Technology and Unbeatable Knowledge

For more than 57 years, the Hurtis family has helped homeowners and businesses stay warm in winter and cool in summer.

Throughout the years, the company has grown to provide technologically advanced heating, cooling and air handling systems to homes, businesses and industries in central Wisconsin, and to provide expert servicing of HVAC equipment.

Today it is one of the largest HVAC companies in the region.  Between 2003 and 2008, its sales increased 323 percent.

Company president Jim Hurtis attributes the growth and success of Hurtis Heating & Air to an unwavering commitment to two business principles:  Building strong lasting relationships with customers based on mutual value, and remaining on the cutting edge of advances in HVAC technology.

“We are a family business which treats its customers like family,” he remarked, adding that Hurtis Heating & Air has one of the highest approval ratings in independent surveys of its customers and strong client loyalty.

“Most of our business growth has come from referrals and repeat business,” Hurtis said, noting that one man, who passed away this past spring, was a customer for more than than half century.

Also key to the company’s success is staying at the cutting edge of new technology and thoroughly understanding how that technology will benefit their customers.

“Everyday there is a new product to look at,” Hurtis observed.  “But we won’t offer a new product until we thoroughly evaluate it and until the manufacturer sends someone to train our technicians.”

“Our position is that we can never learn enough.  Our technicians have three to four times the amount of training that manufacturers require,” he stressed.  “We have people who have exceptional technical skills in each area of our business.”

It was 1952, when Gilbert Hurtis came to Marathon to work for a Standard Oil products distributor and later purchased the distributorship.  As technology evolved, Hurtis adapted by expanding into selling furnaces to it fuel oil customers, then adding natural gas products, air conditioning systems, hydronic heating and cooling systems and custom air handling systems for business and industry.

Since 1991, it has offered Trane heating and air conditioning products and is one of the company’s chartered Comfort Specialists.  It is also a diamond level dealer for Mitsubishi product such as split-ductless air conditioners.  It also installs equipment locally built by Greenheck Fan of Schofield.

In addition to sales and servicing of HVAC systems, Hurtis continues to sell heating oil and is one of few remaining companies that can service fuel oil furnaces.

Hurtis emphasized the lasting relationships his company has with customers is due in large part by his employees who bring to each job years of experience, expertise in the products they sell and service and a positive attitude toward their job and their company.

As one customer noted of the technician who arrived at their home:  “I was impressed with the amount of years of service and how much they like their job and those for whom they worked.”
